One of my good friends found an ad in the news paper about a job fair that was held in a large arena in my hometown. It seems, since the economic “crunch” that we are in and the massive layoffs of over a million people, the job fairs across our country (USA) are getting slammed right now. Well, the job fair was advertised as one of the largest in the USA but could only take in 150 attendees. I would say it was falsely advertised because my hometown of Phoenix Arizona has over several million people. How in the world can this organization produce the largest job event in the USA and only take in 150 people?? Go figure. I wonder how many attendees got any job out of that.
It seems that our whole country is under the impression that following instructions from 80% of the employers of submitting your resume by email somehow is going to get you noticed by the hiring gurus. If you believe that, you are in la la land. As I mentioned previously, go “against the grain” and show up in person to the employer you are interested in.
Forget about calling for an interview, forget about submitting a resume by email. Many employment counselors still agree that the best way to land that job is through networking….person to person. Yes, if you know someone in a particular company or know of someone who knows someone, that is the ultimate way to get in the door.
The next best thing is visiting the physical address of the company and talk to the “gatekeeper” at the company and kindly introduce yourself and hand your resume (hard copy) to that person along with asking for the business card or individual who is responsible for hiring. The most important thing you can do is follow up with that person about a day or so after the physical visit. That is it in a “nutshell.” Forget about the idea that it can’t be done….it can! Lastly, consider this a “numbers” game. I promise, if you persist, you will succeed in landing that job.
There you have it. I saved you hundreds of dollars worth of job seeking secrets!!
Peace and Love,
Bruce
